This is a doctor. 


!!! Note, in Russian we don’t use articles (a/an) and auxiliary verbs (am, is, are) before the name of profession. 



 

Кто э́то? Э́то до́ктор.

Who is this? This is a doctor.


Кто э́то? Э́то учи́тель. Учи́тель.
Who is this? This is a teacher.
 

Я то́же учи́тель.
I’m a teacher too.
 

Кто э́то? Э́то ме́неджер. Ме́неджер.
Who is this? This is a manager.
 

Кто э́то? Э́то секрета́рь. Секрета́рь.
Who is this? This is a secretary.
 

Кто э́то? Э́то архите́ктор. Архите́ктор.
Who is this? This is an architect.
 

Кто э́то? Э́то дире́ктор. Дире́ктор.
Who is this? This is a boss.
 

Кто э́то? Э́то ветерина́р. Ветерина́р.

Male and female jobs

As a rule, the names of jobs in Russian have the same gender for men and women.
 

Он ме́неджер. Она́ ме́неджер.
He is a manager. She is a manager.
 

Он по́вар. Она́ по́вар.
He is a cook. She is a cook.
 

However, there are situations when we have to use a special word for male or female profession or occupation.
 

Наприме́р. For example
 

Он актёр. Она́ актри́са.
He is an actor. She is an actress.
 

Он учи́тель. Она́ учи́тельница.
He/she is a teacher.
 

Он спортсме́н. Она́ спортсме́нка.
He is a sportsman. She is a sportswoman.
 

Он журнали́ст. Она́ журнали́стка.
He/she is a journalist.





Он официа́нт. Она официа́нтка.
He is a waiter. She is a waitress.

Он студе́нт. Она́ студе́нтка.
He/she is a student.
 


How to ask about someone’s profession

Кто вы?Who are you? What do you do?
Я учи́тель. I’m a teacher.
 

Кто он? – Who is he?
Он ме́неджер. – He is a manager.
 

Кто она́? – Who is she?
Она актриса. - She is an actress. 

Кто вы по профе́ссии?What’s your job?
Я программи́ст. – I’m a programmer.
