How to Say Well Wishes in Russian. Level A2

In this lesson we are going to learn how to say well wishes in Russian and other nice things to our friends and family. Let's go!

На э́том уро́ке мы нау́чимся говори́ть хоро́шие пожела́ния по-русски и другие приятные вещи на́шим друзья́м и бли́зким. Пое́хали!

1. На день рожде́ния, Но́вый год и други́е пра́здники мы мо́жем говори́ть таки́е пожела́ния:

Я жела́ю тебе́ уда́чи! - I wish you good luck! (informal)

Я жела́ю Вам уда́чи! - I wish you good luck! (formal)

Уда́чи! - Good luck!

Я жела́ю тебе́ сча́стья, любви́ и тепла́! - I wish you happiness, love and warmth! (informal)

Я жела́ю Вам сча́стья, любви́ и тепла́! - I wish you happiness, love and warmth!(formal)

Сча́стья, любви́ и тепла́! - Happiness, love and warmth (to you)!

Я жела́ю тебе́ ра́дости, улы́бок и сме́ха! - I wish you happiness, smiles and laugh! (informal)

Я жела́ю Вам ра́дости, улы́бок и сме́ха! - I wish you happiness, smiles and laugh!(formal)

Ра́дости, улы́бок и сме́ха! - Happiness, smiles and laugh (to you)!

Я жела́ю тебе́ покло́нников, призна́ния и подде́ржки! - I wish you fans, recognition and support! (informal)

Я жела́ю Вам покло́нников, призна́ния и подде́ржки! - I wish you fans, recognition and support !(formal)

Покло́нников, призна́ния и подде́ржки! - Fans, recognition and support (to you)!

2. Е́сли кто-то ест, вы мо́жете сказа́ть:
If somebody eats, you can say:

Прия́тного аппети́та! - Bon appetite! 

3. Е́сли кто-то е́дет в путеше́ствие, вы мо́жете сказа́ть:
If someone goes on a trip, you can say: 

Счастли́вого пути́! [щасли́вава пути́] - Bon voyage! (lit. Happy trip!).

В до́брый путь! - Bon voyage!

4. Е́сли кто-то чиха́ет, вы мо́жете сказа́ть:
If somebody sneezes, you can say:

Будь здоро́в! – Bless you! (informal, talking to a man)

Будь здоро́ва! – Bless you! (informal, talking to a woman)

Будьте здоро́вы! – Bless you! (formal)

This phrase literally means “be healthy!”.

5. Если ваш друг собирается сдавать экзамен, вы можете сказать:

Удачи на экзамене! - Good luck at your exam!
If your friend is going to pass an exam, you can say:

Ни пу́ха, ни пера! - Good luck! (lit. neither fluff, nor feather; English equivalent is "Break a leg!") 

Правильно отвечать надо так:
The correct response is always:

К чёрту! - To the devil!

Так ра́ньше говори́ли охо́тникам. В языке́ охо́тников пух означа́ет "зверь", а перо́ - "пти́ца", то есть охо́тнику жела́ли не пойма́ть ни зве́ря, ни пти́цы. Дре́вние лю́ди ве́рили, что злы́е ду́хи, кото́рые нахо́дятся ря́дом, услы́шат э́то пожела́ние. Поэ́тому они́ реша́т, что охо́та бу́дет неуда́чной, и не бу́дут вреди́ть челове́ку.

So they used to tell hunters. In the language of hunters, fluff means "the beast," and the feather is a "bird", i.e. the hunter was wished not to catch either the beast or the bird. Ancient people believed that evil spirits who are near, will hear this wish. Therefore, they decide that hunting will be unsuccessful, and will not harm a person.  

6. А вот ещё хоро́шие пожела́ния. 

And here are some more good wishes.

Хоро́шего дня! [харошива дня] – Have a nice day! 

Хоро́ших выходны́х! - Have a nice weekend!

Отли́чного о́тпуска! - Have a great vacation!

Береги́ себя́! - Take care!

С Бо́гом! - With God (blessing)!
