Russian Podcast. Trip to Saint-Petersburg. Level A1

In this lesson you’re going to watch a short video and read a story about the most beautiful Russian city Saint-Petersburg. In addition, you’ll learn how to use Russian adjectives in the context.

Словарь. Vocabulary

Санкт-Петербу́рг – Saint-Petersburg
Пи́тер – Pit’er (This is how St.Pete citizens call their native city).
Го́род – city
Столи́ца – capital

Grammar. Russian Adjective I

The Russian Adjective answers the question КАКО́Й? (which?).
Russian adjectives have three genders and a plural form. Also there are four types of Russian adjectives. Today we’re going to learn the first type. Russian Adjective I is the easiest and the most widespread type :)

Tip. Сове́т
We determine the type of an adjective by the ending of the masculine form. The first type has the ending –ый.

КАКО́Й ОН? – Он нов|ый  (new). Он стар|ый (old).
Other forms have the following endings:

Feminine ending а́я

КАКА́Я ОНА́? - Она́ нов|ая  (new). Она́ ста́р|ая (old).

Neuter ending – oe

КАКО́Е ОНО́? - Оно́ нов|ое  (new). Оно́ ста́р|oe (old).

Plural ending – ые

КАКИ́Е ОНИ́? – Они́ нов|ые  (new). Они́ ста́р|ые (old).

If you want to make a superlative form (i.e. the most), use the words са́м|ый (он), са́м|ая (она), са́м|ое (оно), са́м|ые (они)

Let’s learn how to use some adjectives which we’ll hear in the video.

Ста́р|ый го́род (m) – old city
Ста́р|ая маши́на (f) – old car
